3 Wishes 5 Paragraph Essay

Spread the love

Overview
This activity walks students through the writing process in 8 steps for a simple 5 paragraph essay on three wishes. It is a very structured approach, good for teaching or re-teaching the structure of a wellorganized essay. The rationale is that if a student can master writing a short, very structured essay with good support, they can use that skill to expand their topics and essays into longer essays that retain structure, organization, and good arguments.

Teacher Notes
Students will walk through each step of the writing process on the worksheet, helping ensure they do not skip steps, such as jumping right into the essay. The process walks students through brainstorming, then narrowing the choices by thinking of support for the choices. Students then pick a topic and form a structured thesis.

Next, students begin writing their essay. Use of the 5 Paragraph Model is helpful, but not required. The emphasis is on the rigid structure of a 5 paragraph essay. There are guidelines for revising their papers, before moving on to the final draft. Point values are assigned to each section to help score the process.
